Sharada (born June 12, 1945) is a three time national award winning South Indian actress. She originally hails from Andhra Pradesh. But has achieved success through Malayalam movies. Initially she has done many supporting roles in Telugu films, later on she moved to Malayalam film industry and gained success there. She is also known as Urvashi Sharada because earlier the National Film Award for Best Actress was officially designated as Urvashi Award.

Actress Sharada is very upset by the rumours that the Malayalam film Nayaki is based on her life. She says she is no great personality or her life isn't that eventful that it has to be made into a movie, if she is keen on chronicling her life, she would write her memoirs one day but enunciates that the film is based on the life story of an artiste who is a Christian, unmarried, goes away from movies for a while and remains aloof.

Padma Priya is the young heroine where as Sharada plays the same role as she ages and that is the only similarity to her life. "For the past four years I stopped working as I wasn't keeping good health but when the award winner Jayaraj addressed me as Chechi and said that he had written the character with me on mind I couldn't refuse," says the actress.

Sharada is peeved at the serials being aired on the small tube and says the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is being shown in denigrating manner and is polluting the minds of gullible viewers; also the dressing of heroines is appalling, "Guppeda pattukunantha kalam interest untundhi, adhe guppeda choopinchagane interest pothundi."

She also laments that there are no stories in Telugu films these days and writers can't churn a good script till he demands a foreign tour to sit in isolation and write. "Sontha dabbu pettukuni vellamanandi..finally the producers will vanish and the industry will collapse; people whose families depend on the industry for the livelihood are being ruined.

The actress says people aren't able to recollect the song by the time they step out of the theatre, the language is filled with invectives such as 'anna yessedhaama?' She adds, "A Tamil writer Bharathiar once said that if one had to write a song, they had to do it in sundaramaina Telugu but our people are abusing the language and blowing up crores of rupees like harathi karpooram."

Sharada remarks that though her personal life wasn't that satisfactory she gained unbelievable happiness from her career but despite all this given another life she would love to be born as a man, matter of factly as a male singer. Sharada led a chequered career in politics and career as well. At a time when the Telugu industry wrote her off, Malayalam movies beckoned her and gave her a respectable place. She later made a re-entry into Telugu as a character artiste and this time she was flooded with a variety of roles.

Sharada spends most of her time listening to stories, watching Animal Planet, BBC, History channels as she says she was deprived of school education and she gathers what she can from the media. Otherwise she meditates and derives happiness from spiritual life. Finally, ask her which was the last good film she'd seen and she answers spontaneously..Chandamama directed by Krishna Vamsi.

She adds, "I liked the way he showed the characters did their bit in not offending their parents."
