This year’s Kerala State Film Awards had its share of controversies, one of which was about the award for the best dubbing artiste. Seasoned character actor Reshma was declared the winner for dubbing the voice of Shwetha Menon in ‘Parade shi.’ Zeenath’s elder sister, Hafzath, however, was surprised at the news for she also had dubbed for Shwetha in the movie. The elder sister had dubbed for the older version of Shwetha’s character, and the younger sister for the younger version.
The confusion, however, was cleared by the Academy and now both the sisters will be sharing the award.
The sisters share their views about the unexpected recognition, their experiences in theatre and cinema and how difficult it is for women from a conservative community to become an artiste.
Over to Zeenath: “I am delighted that my sister Reshma will get her share of the award. She did a terrific job in ‘Paradeshi.’ I wasn’t too keen to dub since I had a role in the film, but Mohanlal, the film’s hero, and the director insisted that I dub for Shwetha too. They felt that I could do justice to the dialect of an Eranadan Muslim woman as I am one myself.”
Says the Kozhikode-based actor who made her film debut in ‘Chuvanna Vithukal’ in 1978: “It was the first time I was dubbing for another actor and it could also well be the last, for I would rather concentrate on my acting career. I don’t want to be a dubbing artiste only.”
Stage artiste
Her second release ‘Dhanam’ came 13 years later. “I was busy as a stage artiste and was then married to playwright K.T. Mohammed. I essayed many memorable Reshma characters written by K.T. for the stage. I was noticed for my performance in ‘Poovambazham,’ a tele-film on Doordarshan. It also fetched me the State Television Award for the Best Actress. The television awards had just been introduced that year,” says Zeenath.
Although she is enjoying her stint in cinema, she feels she was slotted into the ‘Mother’ category a bit too early into her career. “In Malayalam cinema, once a mother always a mother; you have to dye your hair grey and have to wear a ‘settu mundu’ all the while,” she smiles.
Follow the leader
Hafzath, though two years older than Zeenath, admits that she follows her younger sibling’s lead. “She was the first one to follow in our aunt’s (actor Nilambuar Ayisha) footsteps. I too was bitten by the acting bug and did a bit of theatre work myself. I too acted in several of K.T.’s plays. Although all his plays were popular, ‘Ithu Bhoomiyanu’ was a masterpiece. He has portrayed the plight of Muslim women accurately in that play.”
She believes that it is still not easy for a Muslim girl from a conservative family to be an artiste.
“Even amongst our family there were objections when Zeenath and I acted. And it is imperative that a girl has total support from her family if she wants to be an artiste. Zeenath was lucky because she married an artiste. I became an artiste as my husband was supportive,” says Hafzath.
Dubbing for Shwetha in ‘Paradeshi,’ she says, was quite a challenge.
“Although I have dubbed for other movies, this was by far my toughest assignment. I had to be careful with my voice as I had to sound like a woman much older than myself and had to retain the tone for a longer period as Shwetha was playing the older version in most parts of the movie.”
The award, she says, comes as a surprise. “Although people had told me that I had a shot at winning the award, I wasn’t too sure. This is a great honour and a confidence booster for me as a dubbing artiste.”
